Black Forest Books & Toys to close

Citing sluggish sales, Black Forest Books & Toys is closing this month after 34 years in Charlotte.

"The economy has just not been good for us," co-owner Pat Siegfried said Monday. "We've had some wonderful, loyal customers, just not enough."

Though it also sells toys, the store is considered one of the nation's oldest continually operating children's bookstores. It opened in 1978, run by Louise Sanford and her mother, Fannie Blackwelder, and operated for years on Cherokee Road in Myers Park/Eastover.

Pat Siegfried and June Hargrove bought the store in 2008, weeks before the height of the recession. Both are former librarians who delighted in matching children with just the right picture book or educational toy. Siegfried served for 14 years as the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library's youth services director.

In 2011, they relocated to a purple house at 1942 Seventh St. in Elizabeth. The move more than doubled their retail space, and they hoped it would increase sales. But a weak economy, coupled with competition from online sellers and e-readers, proved too much to overcome, Siegfried said.

All store items are now at least 30 percent off. Siegfried encouraged anyone with a gift certificate to use it now. The store's last day will be between Jan. 23 and 26, she said.

Seuss-a-Thon comes to Charlotte Saturday

Do you love Dr. Seuss, do you love him? I do!
If you love Dr. Seuss, then this day's for you.

OK, I know, really cheesy. But if you're a fan of one of America's greatest children's authors, you'll want to head on Saturday to the Seuss-a-Thon at Black Forest Books and Toys, 1942 E. Seventh St.

Black Forest is teaming with UNC Charlotte's Children's Literature Program to hold this event, which features prominent Charlotte folks reading aloud their favorite Dr. Seuss books. It'll run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include other Suess-related activities.

The event supports the National Education' Association's Read Across America campaign and celebrates the birthday on Friday of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.

Black Forest Books & Toys is moving to Elizabeth

Black Forest Books & Toys, a fixture in Myers Park/Eastover since 1978, is moving to a new location in Elizabeth -- the purple house on 7th Street that was formerly La-Tea-Das. That's the house in the photo, with co-owners Pat Siegfried (left) and June Hargrove in the foreground.

The store had its final day in the Tudor house at 115 Cherokee Road on Saturday, July 23. It'll open at its new location, 1942 E. 7th St., the week Aug. 8. Look for the grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The new location more than doubles the retail space, allowing the store to offer many more activities, including story times and readings with children's authors, co-owner June Hargrove says.

Black Forest is among the nation's oldest children's bookstores still operating. It's sad leaving the old location, just off Providence Road, Hargrove says, but it'll be a lot easier now to direct customers to the store. Just look for the purple house.
