Jefferson Davis's daughter Winnie and her star-crossed romance

Winnie Davis
It would unthinkable today: Parents opposing their daughter's marriage because of the future husband's politics or the region of his birth. But what makes history so fascinating is the various characters who stride through it. Not least among these is Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, and his formidable wife Varina Anne.

Poor daughter Winnie, the baby of Davis's six children, born in June, 1864, just weeks after her five-year-old brother fell to his death from a third-story balcony in Richmond. It was months before she had a name other than "Pie Cake."

And, as she came into the world, the old Confederacy was heading out, and her father -- old enough to be her grandfather -- was soon imprisoned. In fact, Winnie and her mom spent the first two years of Winnie's life with Davis in the damp confines of Fortress Monroe in Virginia.

But pretty Winnie, later her father's companion in public, became famous in her time as the ideal of the Old South and was dubbed The Daughter of the Confederacy.

Unfortunately, her romance with the young attorney Fred Wilkinson was doomed from the get-go. The man she'd fallen for was the grandson of a famous abolitionist -- Northern, of course -- and it was nix-nix from Mom and Dad from the start.

At 2:30 on Sunday, Heath Hardage Lee, former director of education at the Levine Museum and author of "Winnie Davis: Daughter of the Lost Cause" (Potomac Books), will talk about Winnie's life and the role of women in the early days of the New South.

It's bound to be an interesting talk. A depressed Winnie eventually hurled herself across the Atlantic and began writing and publishing Victorian-age romance novels. She died at 33, and at the funeral, in the back pew, sat the man she had loved.

People just love glorifying the history of these evil racist confederates.

Try and humanize them all you'd like. They had no problem raping, lynching, and brutalizing slaves, selling off loving families for profit, etc.

While they lived in their pampered estates and profited off of the misery of others, others suffered.

They were no different than Nazi's.

You are no different yourself. Stereotyping and dehumanizing confederates. While I don't agree with slavery, not all confederates were racist. Many owned no slaves. Of those that had slaves, some saw fit to educate them and treat them well. Study the topic instead of making sweeping generalizations. That's what leads to prejudice. A good counterpoint to your Nazi analogy was Oskar Schindler. See the movie "Schindler's List" produced by Steven Spielberg, a Jew.

For 1000s of years African slaves were sold by their tribal chiefs by the millions for billions in gold and silver to the Khazar muslim Asians who shipped them to North Africa, Europe, Asia and later the new Americas for auction. Nothing much has changed today as mostly African muslims are the new slave dealers and slavery is still alive and well in many parts of that continent.

Slavery was always a major mistake in the new west Americas and worst economic system ever bankrupting half of large plantations whose owners paid an average of 50k each in todays dollars to get everything free in exchange for their soft labor picking cotton and cleaning house for a couple hundred years.

The south founded Liberia in 1821 for liberated ex-slaves had every intention to free all its slaves and revert to the vastly superior economic system of paid labor and share cropping before the peasant abolitionist Lincoln was elected who caused the secession movement.

After the devastating war there was not a single reparation lawsuit ever filed by a single slave obviously proving there was no abuse. All 4 million slaves without exception also took the surnames of their ex-masters to show their eternal gratitude for getting them out of that African hellhole and into the enlightenment of the western world.

Many went to work for their ex owners after the war or became farmers. There were also as many as 5k freed slaves who were slave owners and 10k indians who owned slaves before Lincoln's war.

Lot of ignorance to the real truth about unnecessary unneeded African slavery in the Americas sales gimmick by Asian muslim Khazars and tribal chiefs purging their rejects to make billions in the west.
America owned 5% of the total slaves in the western hemisphere.

White slaves had built and maintained all of Europe and its grande cities for 1000s of yrs previously but it had been outlawed at about the same time white latino hispanic Italian Columbus working for the K&Q of Spain sailed west in 1492 looking for a new passage to India since muslims had cut off the trading routes.

Muslims are always the real problem.
